As I referenced in the Linkedin post below, spying should be assumed until proven otherwise for all Chinese-sourced digital products. China has a well-documented history of spying for the purpose of stealing intellectual property as well as gathering real-time intelligence, for both commercial and military purposes, and the groups behind both activities are often the same.
Considering the degree to which digital components from China are being compromised, it can be safe to assume that the threat from China extends beyond just espionage to potentially include sabotage as well. This is the primary reason that China-sourced products should not be used in any area of critical infrastructure and is the reasoning behind the US ban of Huawei products.
